I’ve always directed this blog at young people who are in their 20s or early 30s and a huge part of that time period is becoming a first time parent and this can come with a lot of financial challenges. One of the biggest challenges is making the decision to either stay home with your kids or go back to work.
That’s why I wanted to showcase a number of real ways to make money from home that you could do while your children are asleep, or while they are playing in the next room. These work from home jobs have a variety of difficulty and time investment so there really is something for everybody.

11 Real Ways to Make Money From Home
1. Blogging
Blogging is a really amazing way to make money from home because it can turn into a full blown business where you can earn way more money than from a 9-5 and never have to leave your kids. This blog was started in mid-2017 and is now making me a few thousand dollars a month with honestly minimal work on my part.
One thing to note is that blogging is very time intensive at the beginning. You’re going to need a lot of content to start out, which can take a very long time to write and get shown to other people. There are also so many steps to starting a blog, which is why I co-created a course called Beginner Blogging Bootcamp which is 100% FREE and can be a great place to start in your blogging journey.
I really do think that starting a blog is one of the best side hustles for a stay at home parent because you have the opportunity to be around your kids and still be working on a laptop while they play. You can learn so many new skills that could even be marketable in the traditional job market when you’re ready to go back to work.
2. Freelance Writing
If you don’t really want the pressure of running your own blog, you could always become a freelance writer! Basically, a freelance writer is someone who is paid to write content (like blog articles or even entire books) for someone who has a platform or other big companies.
For example, I’m thinking about hiring freelance writers for this website so I can free more of my time up to focus on other projects, and when I do this I would pay a few hundred dollars per article to someone who writes my content for me.
There’s a really awesome course that can teach you everything you need to know about freelance writing called Freelance to 5K that is all about how to make your first $5,000 in a single month using freelance writing.
In this course, you’ll learn all the hard stuff about creating a freelance writing business including how to pick a profitable freelance writing niche, how to pitch yourself as a freelance writer, and so much more.
3. Proofreading
If you aren’t much of a writer you could become a Proofreader and build a really awesome proofreading business from home.
If you aren’t aware, a proofreader is essentially just an editor that goes through documents that were taken (usually in professional settings) and makes sure it all makes sense and flows nicely.
Just like most side hustles, it does take a bit of know-how to learn the ropes of becoming a proofreader, and you should definitely check out this FREE Workshop by Proofread Anywhere to teach you how to do it!
4. Amazon FBA
Did you know that a lot of the items you buy on amazon can actually just have been sent to amazon by people like you and me? There are people who go to different stores like walmart and buy things that are on sale and send them in to Amazon for their fulfilment services and selling them at a profit.
This is a really awesome way to make a lot of money if you have the time to devote to collecting items, and finding the best deals both in store and online. There are people out there making over 100,000$ per month from Amazon FBA and it’s a really great option to work from home.
If you are interested in getting started with Amazon FBA there is an awesome family who make their money through FBA who teach you how to do it too! You can check out The Selling Family and get started.
5. Do Surveys
I’ll be honest, this one isn’t going to get you rich but it can make enough money to cover a few bills that can help make it easier for you to stay home. Doing surveys is a really simple way to make money from home.
American Consumer Opinion is the only legitimate survey website that I’ve ever been able to make money from and is the one that I will forever recommend to my readers because you can make decent money from it super easily!
6. Teach English Online
Do you have a bachelors degree? Yes? AWESOME! Then you can become an online english teacher using VIPKID. This is a service that is created for children in other countries to learn english online so they can have more opportunities in the job market and you can get paid around $20 per hour to teach them.
It’s important to note that since you’d be teaching other people the hours aren’t as flexible and you’re best off sticking to a bit of a schedule if you want to make the most of teaching english.
7. Flip Furniture
When I first graduated University, I was looking for just about any way to not get a “grown up” job and I started a business where I flipped furniture. I would go to garage sales and thrift stores and buy inexpensive wood furniture and give it a coat of paint and sell it for 5-10x what I paid for it.
This is a really awesome way to make money from home because it’s not just sitting in front of a computer all day long (which can get very boring, trust me). You get to go outside of the house and bring along your kiddos and make a decent income doing it.

It seems like just about anybody can make a youtube channel and turn it into a full-time job these days, so why not you? If you want to stay home with your kids, you could make vlogs of your family life.
You also have a really awesome option to take whatever you’re into and turn that into a youtube channel. For example, if you love talking about money you could turn that into a youtube channel. If you’re into painting your nails, you can even make a youtube channel about nail polish and nail art. The opportunities are seriously endless.
10. Bake
If you have any time of baking skill you can definitely make money from it. You can sell things like cookies, or cakes and advertise them on facebook marketplace or sell them to your friends and family.
I’ve even heard of people buying a cotton candy machine and offering cotton candy to people for birthday parties and events and selling them for $50 a bag when they only cost $0.05 to make!
11. Join The Gig Economy
One really awesome thing about the internet is that you can pick up jobs doing a variety of things just using your cell phone. There are so many jobs in what’s known as the “gig economy” that can make you a bit of money on the side that definitely deserve a mention in this article. Here are just a few of my favourites:
